Tema Principal

Chubu Electric Power H1 FY2026 Earnings Presentation (April–September 2026)

Beneficios Clave

  • •Full first-half results for Chubu Electric Power (TSE: 9502), Japan's third-largest electric utility: consolidated net sales of ¥1,945.2 billion (¥19,452 億円, +11.3%), ordinary income of ¥41.0 billion (¥410 億円, down ¥155.2 billion) and a net loss attributable to owners of ¥280.4 billion (△¥2,804 億円)
  • •Explains the ¥370.3 billion extraordinary loss — a ¥304.9 billion impairment of nuclear power fixed assets plus a ¥65.3 billion nuclear fuel valuation loss — booked after the company withdrew its Hamaoka Units 3 and 4 restart applications over the seismic ground-motion misconduct case
  • •Segment waterfalls for Miraiz (retail, ordinary loss of ¥103.8 billion), Power Grid (loss of ¥10.7 billion) and JERA (equity-method income of ¥134.8 billion, +71.5%), each with and without the fuel-cost time-lag effect (期ずれ)
  • •Revised FY2026 guidance: net sales ¥4.2 trillion, ordinary income ¥110 billion and a net loss of ¥215 billion — the first annual loss in five years — with the ¥70 annual dividend maintained
  • •Reference charts on JKM spot LNG prices and JEPX Chubu-area wholesale power prices that show the Middle East–driven fuel spike behind the guidance cut

Audiencia Objetivo

  • •Investors and analysts covering Japanese utilities and the TSE Prime power sector
  • •Energy-market researchers tracking JERA, LNG pricing and Japan's nuclear restart timeline
  • •Finance professionals who want an English walk-through of a Japanese 決算説明資料 (earnings briefing deck)
  • •Corporate finance and IR teams looking for a clean utility earnings-deck structure to model their own presentation on

Casos de Uso

  • •Reviewing Chubu Electric's first-half FY2026 (fiscal year ending March 2027) results and guidance revision
  • •Understanding how fuel-cost adjustment time lags (期ずれ) swing Japanese utility profits between quarters
  • •Researching the accounting impact of the Hamaoka nuclear plant impairment
  • •Using the deck as a reference template for a bilingual-style utility earnings presentation with waterfall bridges and variance tables

Propuestas de Valor Únicas

  • •Every one of the 26 slides is summarized in English from the Japanese-language original filed on TDnet, with figures kept in the company's own ¥100 million (億円) units
  • •Covers both reported results and the company's time-lag-adjusted figures, which is how Japanese utilities themselves frame underlying performance
  • •Downloadable as the original PDF and as an editable PowerPoint (PPTX) conversion

Extraordinary Loss Related to Hamaoka Nuclear Power Station

Contenido

After receiving the investigation committee's report on September 11, 2026 regarding the improper handling of design-basis ground motion in the Hamaoka safety review, the company withdrew the Units 3 and 4 reactor installation change applications on September 25. With restart timing and safety-upgrade costs now uncertain, estimated future cash flows fell below book value, so it booked a ¥3,049 億円 impairment of nuclear power fixed assets and construction in progress plus a ¥653 億円 nuclear fuel valuation loss, ¥3,703 億円 in total. Full-year FY2026 extraordinary loss is expected at about ¥3,800 億円, including about ¥100 億円 of further impairment on capex from Q3.

(Reference) What the Hamaoka 'Impairment Loss' Means

Contenido

Plain-language explainer: an impairment writes down fixed assets whose cost recovery can no longer be adequately supported at the reporting date. The withdrawal of the applications raised uncertainty over future income, so the company judged it could not demonstrate recoverability with sufficient evidence. Key messages: the write-down does not mean decommissioning Hamaoka; it is an accounting judgment based on current information; and the company is prioritizing preventing recurrence and restoring trust, saying it is not in a position to discuss restart.

Preguntas Frecuentes

Preguntas comunes sobre esta diapositiva y el contenido de la presentación subyacente.

What were Chubu Electric Power's headline results for H1 FY2026?

For April–September 2026, consolidated net sales were ¥1,945.2 billion (¥19,452 億円), up 11.3%. Ordinary income fell 79.1% to ¥41.0 billion, and net income attributable to owners swung to a loss of ¥280.4 billion, mainly because of the ¥370.3 billion extraordinary loss related to the Hamaoka nuclear power station.

Why did Chubu Electric record an impairment on the Hamaoka nuclear plant?

After an investigation report into the improper handling of design-basis ground motion in Hamaoka's safety review, the company withdrew its Units 3 and 4 applications in September 2026. Restart timing and safety costs became too uncertain to support the assets' book value, so it wrote down ¥304.9 billion of nuclear fixed assets and booked a ¥65.3 billion nuclear fuel valuation loss. The deck stresses this is an accounting judgment, not a decision to decommission the plant.

What is the 'time-lag effect' (期ずれ) mentioned throughout the deck?

Japanese fuel cost adjustment systems pass fuel price changes into electricity tariffs with a delay. When fuel prices rise quickly, costs outrun revenue and the utility books a temporary loss; when they fall, it books a gain. In H1 FY2026 the combined JERA and Miraiz time-lag effect was a loss of about ¥54.0 billion, versus a ¥33.0 billion gain a year earlier.

How did Chubu Electric change its FY2026 guidance?

Versus the July 29, 2026 forecast, net sales were raised to ¥4.2 trillion, ordinary income cut to ¥110 billion from ¥185 billion, and net income cut to a loss of ¥215 billion from a ¥160 billion profit. The annual dividend forecast of ¥70 per share (¥35 interim plus ¥35 year-end) is unchanged.

Is this presentation originally in Japanese, and where was it published?

Yes. The original is a Japanese-language earnings briefing deck (決算説明資料) titled '2026年度第2四半期 決算説明資料', released on October 29, 2026 through TDnet, the Tokyo Stock Exchange's timely disclosure system, under securities code 9502. The page summaries here are English translations of each slide, with amounts kept in the company's ¥100 million (億円) units.

What do 億円 and 億kWh mean in the figures?

億 is 100 million. So ¥19,452 億円 equals ¥1.9452 trillion, and 490 億kWh equals 49.0 billion kWh (49.0 TWh). Negative values are shown with a triangle (△), the standard Japanese notation.

Which fiscal period does H1 FY2026 cover?

Chubu Electric's fiscal year runs from April to March, so FY2026 is April 2026 to March 2027, and H1 (2Q cumulative) covers April–September 2026.

Can I download this deck as an editable PowerPoint?

Yes. The gallery page offers the original PDF and an editable PPTX converted from it, which is useful if you want to reuse the waterfall bridges, segment tables or guidance layouts as a template for your own earnings presentation.
